Braucht Deutschland einen Mindestlohn? Eine Frage, zur der es viele Meinungen gibt. Die Thematik der Einführung eines flächendeckenden Mindestlohns beschäftigt Deutschland schon seit vielen Jahren. Sie steht immer wieder im Zentrum vieler Diskussionen. Gerade vor dem Hintergrund der Arbeitnehmerfreizügigkeit nahm die Debatte wieder an Fahrt auf. Seit dem 01.05.2011 gilt sie auch für Arbeitnehmer aus Estland, Lettland, Litauen, Polen, der Slowakei, Slowenien, Tschechien und Ungarn. Viele sind der Meinung, dass die Arbeitnehmerfreizügigkeit einen flächendeckenden Mindestlohn mehr denn je erforderlich macht. Es könnte zu einer Verschärfung der Armutsproblematik in Deutschland kommen, da insbesondere der Niedriglohnsektor betroffen wäre. Aber es gibt auch mindestens genauso viele Stimmen gegen einen Mindestlohn. Es könnte durch ihn zu einem Abbau an Arbeitsplätzen kommen. Ein Konsens, ob er nun eingeführt werden soll oder nicht, ist noch in weiter Ferne. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, einen Überblick über die Argumente zu schaffen, warum ein flächendeckender Mindestlohn in Deutschland notwendig sein könnte. Mögliche Aspekte hinsichtlich der Wirkung eines Mindestlohns werden hierbei mit gängigen ökonomischen Modellen überprüft. Da es sich letztlich aber nur um Modelle handelt, werden auch empirische Befunde betrachtet. Somit können die Aussagen der Theorie kritisch überprüft werden. Letztlich soll daraus eine Handlungsempfehlung abgeleitet und die Frage beantwortet werden, ob Deutschland einen Mindestlohn braucht oder nicht.
