Neither cnor gbeginning a Word before lx, are sounded; as, Cnidus, Gnomon, are pronounced Nidus, Numan. And in English, knit, griaslz, are pronounced nil, nash. Palso is sometimes quiescent, as, Psallo, Plolemrims. The same is observable of mbeginning a Word before 11, as, Mncmon. T3 before aV owel is sounded like shi; as, Natio ;except at the beginning of a Word, and whens or an comes immediately belore it; as, Tiara, Questia, Mixtio. AS yllable is the Comprehension of oneS ound in a Word; as, IY r, There are as manyS yllables in a Word as there are Vowels distinctly sounded; as in I irlule.: are three, Vir-lu-les If a Word has but oneS yllabie, it is calleda Monosyllable ;if two, aD issylluble ;if three, aT risyllable; if more, a Pi(yayaée.
