Today our reflection in on Matt. 5:43-48, in which Jesus teaches his disciples about the love of God and the love of our enemies. We love God when we become as perfect as Our Heavenly Father and Jesus gives us the example. We love our enemies when we do good to those who harm us.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. (Matt. 5:43-45)

Jesus begins to perfect the teaching that says to love our neighbor and hate our enemy, but Jesus turns things around and extends our charity even further by loving those who persecute us and do us harm. The reason Jesus gives is because this kind of response to our enemies makes us true children of our Heavenly Father. After all, Our Heavenly Father gives to all alike, the good and the bad, day in and out, century after century, never failing to exercise his charity. He never asks for anything in return. We, on the other hand, demand others to treat us well and to honor us at every turn of the road. Jesus says that kind of behavior doesn’t make us children of God as much as loving our persecutors and enemies. Jesus uses the phrase that should be our motto in Christian action: make your sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and unjust.
